Second Graders have been working on shapes!! We were specifically working with 2-D shapes and their attributes. Students loved the challenge of creating new shapes with a group of shapes!

Students are presenting their Recipes for a Hero this week to the 2nd grade class. Everyone is very prepared for the presentations and has put a lot of effort and time into their creations. Students are enjoying learning all the interesting facts about different heroes from long ago from their peers. During the presentations, students are identifying the qualities that made their heroes so special. Hoot-Hoot-Hooray for 2nd Grade! Ghandi said, "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." This week we launched our Hero project with several heroic visitors from our community. We had an ambulance driver, a policeman, and a fireman visit. We also looked at a couple of heroes from long ago, Ruby Bridges and Jackie Robinson, and discussed the qualities they possess and why they are admired. With this project we will be looking at our own personal qualities and exploring our own "unsung" heroism. Students shared their learning this week with parents at "The Changing Earth" gallery walk. We had several groups of students presenting how the earth changes over time. There was a demonstration of a volcano eruption, a landslide, a flood and several models of weathering and erosion to view. Students did an amazing job in their presentations.

Students were very busy this week working collaboratively with their Changing Earth groups. After researching information, taking notes, and preparing models and posters for their presentations, they have been practicing the presentations in front of their peers. They've been giving each other "Warm" (I really like how you projected your voice loud and clear..) and "Cool" (I'm wondering if you could have more eye contact and keep your body still when you are presenting...) feedback to help each other refine their presentations. We look forward to sharing our learning with parents next Wednesday. For the culmination of "Our Changing Earth" project students chose a topic that they were interested in learning more about and spent the week learning about their topics with research. There were 4 different topics that related to different ways the earth's surface can change over a time period, Volcano's, Floods, Landslides and Erosion/Weathering. Students also created models to share all their learning in a presentation with their peers.
Students enjoy sharing their thinking about different strategies they use to solve word problems. Various strategies are really helping ALL types of learners understand the concepts and not just memorize a set of steps for solving problems. Hearing peers thinking also helps students solidify and extend their understanding. Getting students to talk to each other about the strategies that are being chosen with a common language was something we worked on this week. A great way to support communication with math is use the sentence frames we created. This week we introduced the sentence frames that will help them communicate and build their understanding. Common Core is asking us to be so much more thoughtful about how we communicate and develop the math for students. This week students investigated 4 different types of Erosion with simulations that were demonstrated in a science lab. They were introduced to the Scientific Method, which scientists use to organize and track their studies. In our lab, we started with a question about the causes of Erosion, and set up examples to observe the affects of wind, water and glaciers on the land. As students observed the different types of Erosion, they took notes and made predictions about the outcomes. We will be doing several science labs using the scientific method with the current project “Our Changing Earth”.
This week students enjoyed working together in teams of three to research and prepare for a presentation on how the earth changes. Students read and took notes on how land changes from earthquakes, volcanos, floods, erosion, and weathering in Mexico, Iceland and Hawaii. After the small groups complete the note taking and posters, they will be sharing their learning with their peers. |
